TRUESDAIL TO PARTICIPATE IN RMTC GLAUCINE TASK FORCE

Truesdail Laboratories, Inc. is pleased to announce its participation in the newly formed RMTC (Racing Medication &Testing Consortium) Glaucine Task Force. Truesdail was among the first labs to develop and bring Glaucine testing into our routine screening program.

Beginning in early February 2016, Truesdail and several university labs have finalized positive tests for the substance Glaucine. Glaucine is a prohibited substance that has bronchodilator, antitussive, and anti-inflammatory effects. Glaucine has potential performance enhancing effects that could potentially make it an attractive alternative to similar compounds that are already regulated.

Our work, alongside other RMTC Accredited University Labs highlighted the need for a task force to review the issue. Glaucine is not currently listed on the Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI) Uniform Classification Guidelines for Foreign Substances and Recommended Penalties.

Truesdail’s Technical Director, Dr. Anthony Fontana, was named as a member of the RMTC task force. Its main purpose is to identify existing information, determine what research, if any, needs to be conducted, and to develop a plan to address the usage of Glaucine as a performance enhancer and address potential sources of contamination for the compound. The need for a task force was identified  because of the potential environmental contamination sources for Glaucine. Glaucine is an alkaloid from the Yellow Horned Poppy, Glauciumflavum, but it is also produced in the Tulip Poplar tree as a wound response antimicrobial. Truesdail has worked closely with its customers to identify potential environmental contamination sources related to Glaucine positives, and has confirmed that Glaucine is present in some sawdust and shavings. Thus, there is a potential for an environmental source for the Glaucine from bedding materials derived from tulip poplar wood.

Founded in 1931, Truesdail Laboratories is committed to its motto of “Excellence in Independent Testing”. Our mission is to deliver quality, compliance, and defensible data. Accreditations include: ISO/IEC 17025, ISO/IEC 17065, RMTC, ILAC G-7, and CA ELAP. Our new state-of-the-art testing laboratory in Irvine, California was designed around modern laboratory practices and efficiency to ensure quality data within required the turnaround times. Truesdail Laboratories testing services include the following fields: certification of products for drinking water use, animal drug testing, nutraceutical testing, and environmental drinking water and wastewater testing.

The RMTC is incorporated as a tax-deductible organization with both scientific and educational purposes. It is governed by a board of directors representing 23 racing industry stakeholder groups.
